Zoey Redbird is the protagonist of the novel and the narrator of the story. In the end, she must make a difficult decision that will ultimately determine the fate of the House of Night, and those she cares about. Zoey must learn to accept the consequences of her choices, and the power of her own strength, as she attempts to protect her loved ones and the House of Night. The novel explores themes of friendship, betrayal, love, and power. Along the way, Zoey also has to contend with the power struggle between her and her mentor, Neferet, who has her own agenda for the House of Night.
Zoey is aided in her quest by her five best friends, the Nerd Herd, who come to her aid in times of need. The novel is set in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and follows Zoey as she learns the ways of the Vampire, struggles to master her new powers, and fights to protect her loved ones from the evil forces that threaten them. In addition to learning how to control her fledgling powers, Zoey must also come to terms with her newfound feelings for her best friend, Heath, and her strong attraction to Erik Night. The story follows Zoey Redbird as she navigates her new life as a fledgling vampire at the House of Night, a vampiric boarding school.
It is the fourth novel in the House of Night series, a series of young adult fantasy novels.
